Information Modeling โ€” All about Information Modeling

Good business data models are the bridge between business and IT. In the Data Modeling Master Class you learn to read, build and validate them โ€” with over 30 exercises.

New: the DMMC modules are now available as eLearning for pre-order โ€” with an early-bird price.

Why information modeling?

Why do we spend a lot of money every year and thousands of hours building solutions that don't fit in the end? Often it comes down to business requirements that were captured and formulated poorly.

Good business data models prevent this waste. They capture business terminology and requirements precisely and at different levels of detail โ€” ensuring smooth communication between business and IT.

The modules of the Data Modeling Master Class

Three modules that build on each other โ€” from the foundations through building schemas to assessment with the Data Model Scorecardยฎ.

01

Foundations

  • Advantages of data modeling
  • Five prerequisites for creating a model
  • Components: entities, attributes, representatives, relationships
  • Subtyping, keys, hierarchies and networks
02

Schema

  • Conceptual, logical and physical models
  • Relational and dimensional data models
  • Distinguish NoSQL models from classic approaches
  • Choose structure and methodology deliberately
03

Scorecard

  • Best practices based on the Data Model Scorecardยฎ
  • Ten categories: correctness, completeness, schema, structure
  • Abstraction, standards, readability, definitions
  • Consistency and data

What you can do afterwards

  • Explain the components of data modeling and identify them in your projects through targeted questions.
  • Read a data model of any size and complexity as confidently as a book.
  • Validate any data model using key parameters โ€” scope, abstraction, time frame, function, format โ€” and the Data Model Scorecardยฎ.
  • Build relational and dimensional, conceptual and logical data models โ€” and know the trade-offs of physical implementation for RDBMS and NoSQL.
  • Apply requirements elicitation techniques: interviews, artifact analysis, prototyping and workplace observation.

Exercises & material

Over 30 hands-on exercises accompany the modules. Each one is explained in detail, with enough time to work through it yourself. A workbook guides you through every task.

30+ exercises

From "Modeling a book" and "Fun with cardinality" to the Six Questions.

Workbook

To work through all exercises โ€” explained step by step.

Normalization & reservation

Examples like "Identify the normalization issues" and "Making a reservation".

Frequently asked questions

Is prior knowledge required?

No. The Data Modeling Master Class requires no prior knowledge of data modeling โ€” there are no special prerequisites for attending.

Is SQL required?

No. The Master Class is independent of any specific physical implementation of the data models. Knowledge of SQL or other programming languages is not required to attend.

What are the technical requirements?

For the virtual training you need a laptop, PC or tablet with access to Microsoft Teams (browser or client).

Online, In-House or eLearning โ€” which fits?

Online training (Open Class): fixed date, mixed participants, in German. In-House: your team only, dates and content individual, English on request. eLearning: recorded DMMC modules at your own pace.

What's the difference between DMMC and the FCO-IM Fundamentals Class?

The Data Modeling Master Class focuses mainly on business-oriented modeling (conceptual, logical, physical; relational, dimensional, NoSQL). The FCO-IM Fundamentals Class teaches fact-oriented information modeling with CaseTalk โ€” a German edition is currently in preparation.
